In the Romanian capital of Bucharest, thousands of people took to the streets on Friday to protest against the far right and in support of the European Union.

Organisers reported that around 20,000 individuals participated in the demonstration.

The protests were timed ahead of the second round of presidential elections, which will occur in just over a week and may result in a far-right victory.

Far-right candidate George Simion, from the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), is notably critical of Brussels and opposes aid to Ukraine.

Simion, a supporter of former US President Donald Trump and a popular figure on TikTok, secured over 40% of the vote in the first round of the presidential elections.

The independent and pro-European mayor of Bucharest, 55-year-old Nicusor Dan, finished second with 20.9 per cent of the votes.

A run-off between these candidates is scheduled for 18 May.
