On Sunday, about a dozen volunteers collected roughly 60 litres of rubbish along the Scheldt River in Dendermonde as part of a clean-up initiative organised by consultancy firm Antea Group and the environmental project Drinkable Rivers.

“The route was relatively clean, yet we still managed to gather significant waste,” said Pauley van Rixtel of Antea Group. “We primarily removed litter such as cigarette butts, cans, and food packaging. There were also hard plastics and construction waste along the river.”

The volunteers set off around 9:00 from Sint-Usmarusstraat in Dendermonde. By 15:30, the clean-up was complete, with the team finishing in Driegoten, Hamme. They covered a route of approximately 10 kilometres.

The primary focus is to clean the area between the path and the river, where Antea Group notes walkers often leave rubbish. During the walk, information about the water quality of the Scheldt was also provided.
