A mother and her two children were hospitalised after suffering mild smoke inhalation during a fire in their apartment in Laeken on Sunday, according to the Brussels Fire Brigade.
At around 18:30 the Fire and Emergency Medical Service of the Brussels-Capital Region was called to a fully developed fire in the building on Prince Léopold Square.
According to fire brigade spokesperson Walter Derieuw, the emergency services evacuated the mother and children from the second-floor balcony.
Ground-floor residents were also evacuated and the flames were brought under control.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined but was likely accidental.
The damage rendered the apartment building temporarily uninhabitable. The fire caused significant soot build-up in the stairwell. Gas and electricity were cut off in the apartment.
The local council and police are temporarily rehousing the residents.
