A security inspection is currently underway at Ghent Prison following a failed escape attempt by two inmates late on Sunday night, according to the prison administration and the East Flanders Public Prosecutor's Office.

The specifics of the escape attempt are still under investigation, but it is known that the two inmates shared a cell and managed to create a hole in the wall. "During the escape attempt, one of them suffered a severe fall and was taken to hospital with serious injuries," stated the spokesperson for the prison administration, Kathleen Van De Vijvern.

Initially, the man, who is in his 30s, was in life-threatening condition. However, his condition has since stabilised, the Prosecutor's Office confirmed.

The other inmate, a man in his 50s, was apprehended by prison staff and police while still within the prison's walls.

In light of these events, the prison is undergoing a thorough security inspection. Morning activities have been cancelled, and inmates are only allowed to leave their cells if they are being transferred to court.
