The Flemish Government is simplifying the subsidy procedure for parish churches, according to the region's Interior Minister Hilde Crevits (CD&V).
Currently, it takes an average of two to three years for work to begin. From now on, however, projects can start as soon as the subsidy application is submitted.
The simplified procedure applies to both new and existing applications, reducing the wait time and allowing local and church councils to start their projects more quickly.
"This administrative simplification signals that we trust local authorities and want to relieve them of excessive regulatory pressure," stated Crevits. "This allows them to focus on tangible challenges and projects in their municipality or city."
This year, every municipality must also consult with their church boards to create and approve a church policy plan, which includes future primary and secondary uses of church buildings.
