A man on a moped was killed after being hit by a police car on Sunday night in the Marolles district of Brussels.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Rue Blaes and Rue de Capucins in the centre of Brussels at around 00:25,

According to a witness at the scene cited by SudInfo, there was a heavy impact in the collision.

Emergency services attempted to resuscitate him before the ambulance arrived, but were unsuccessful. The scooter rider died at the scene.

According to SudInfo's report, a police check after the accident found that the scooter may have been stolen.

However, the incident did not occur during a car chase – the rider was not being actively pursued by the police before the collision, the French-speaking media added.

Two ambulances and a mobile emergency and resuscitation service (SMUR) were dispatched to the scene.

Fire service spokesperson Walter Derieuw stated that one individual died at the scene despite attempts at resuscitation. Another person, who sustained injuries, was transported to the hospital.

Derieuw added that the injured person’s life does not appear to be in danger. He provided no further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the accident.
