Energy company Engie is preparing energy contracts that include a 'happy hour' where electricity will be cheaper at certain times of the day, according to a spokesperson for the energy company.
During an announcement about a new battery park in Kallo, Engie revealed plans to enhance consumer flexibility through these contracts.
"We are working on contracts that promote flexibility and encourage customers to plan their energy use when there is an abundance of renewable energy. It’s like a happy hour," said Engie spokesperson Hellen Smeets. "People will pay less at specific times of the day."
Engie is not the first to introduce such contracts. For instance, Energie.be, a smaller market player, offers free consumption between 12:00 and 16:00 on Sunday afternoons.
Negative electricity prices are increasingly common on the energy market when there is a high supply of renewable energy. The market is seeking solutions to deal with these negative prices, including encouraging consumption during such times.
Engie is Belgium’s largest electricity supplier. More details on the contract are expected to be provided next week.
