Sammy Mahdi has been re-elected as the head of the Christen Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V) party, securing 88.77 % of the votes, the CD&V announced on Friday.
Mahdi faced only one challenger in the internal leadership election: Maarten Forceville, a councillor from Herent, who criticised him for a lack of vision while positioning himself as a grassroots candidate.
Despite this, Mahdi received a resounding mandate from the members to continue his leadership role, allowing him theoretically to remain chairman until June 2028.
“I am very grateful for the confirmation of my mandate,” Mahdi responded. “It is heartening to know our members trust me to continue on the chosen path.”
The 36-year-old CD&V chief said that in the coming years he aims to promote Christian Democracy. He considers the party’s continued renewal as his “most important task in the next three years.”
