A man who barricaded himself on the roof of a building in the Brussels municipality of Ganshoren last Monday, prompting a significant police response, has been arrested.
The Brussels Prosecutor’s Office confirmed Thursday morning. On Monday, police officers from the Brussels-West zone visited Ganshoren, at Rue de l’Église Saint-Martin, to serve an arrest warrant to a 26-year-old man with several convictions, the prosecutor’s spokesperson, Martin François, stated.
According to early investigation findings, the man fled through a window and took refuge on the building’s roof when he saw the police officers entering.
For nearly ten hours, the young man refused to surrender. "He reportedly threw stones at the police and vehicles parked in the street," continued the spokesperson for the Brussels prosecutor.
With the support of twelve police patrols, a federal police helicopter, a drone, and a negotiator, the man was eventually apprehended unharmed.
The individual was handed over to the Brussels Prosecutor’s Office, and a judge was assigned to handle charges of armed rebellion, threats, and public insults.
On Wednesday, he was formally charged and placed under arrest by the examining judge.
