David Leisterh, the leader of the Brussels Liberals, is finalising a draft of a general policy statement, which he will soon present to potential coalition partners, he revealed in an interview with Canal Z.
“Anyone with a constructive approach can read this text, propose amendments, and consider it as a starting point for compromise,” stated Mr Leisterh, noting that the draft is based on his party’s electoral programme.
“We won the elections, and the voter’s message cannot be ignored,” he justified. However, the Liberal leader also mentioned that he reviewed the programmes of potential coalition partners and incorporated certain elements.
His draft declaration focuses on three priorities: cleansing Brussels’ finances, restoring security, and boosting the economy.
The budgetary proposals draw from the MR’s programme and suggestions from various independent institutions, and they include reforms and structural simplifications for Brussels, according to Mr Leisterh.
For the Boitsfort native, forming a new government is urgent, not only because of the threat from the credit rating agency Standard and Poor’s but also to manage the redevelopment of the Audi site in Forest.
Mr Leisterh acknowledges that compromises will need to be made on various issues, such as housing for the PS.
Drafting a general policy statement typically concludes the process of forming a new majority, but due to nearly a year of political stalemate in Brussels, the Liberals have decided to reverse the usual process to try to break the deadlock in the capital.
