Economic inspectors from Belgium, France, Ireland, and the Netherlands, alongside the European Commission, have threatened to take action against the Chinese online retailer Shein over alleged illegal trading practices.
Belgium’s Ministry of Economy, which oversees economic inspections, stated in a press release that Shein engages in activities such as offering fake promotions, unjustly pressuring consumers to buy, providing misleading information on rights of withdrawal and refunds, and giving inaccurate or deceptive details on sustainability.
The Chinese company has been given one month to respond to these allegations and is allowed to propose amendments to its practices during this period. If its proposals are deemed inadequate, national regulators may implement measures against the retailer.
Additionally, the European Commission is conducting a separate investigation into Shein’s compliance with the Digital Services Act, which was introduced last year to combat illegal online content.
