Finland has summoned the Russian ambassador to provide explanations regarding two Russian military planes suspected of violating Finnish airspace on Friday, according to the Finnish Foreign Ministry.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon off the coast of Porvoo, about 50 kilometres south of Helsinki. Finnish Defence Minister Antti Hakkanen said in a communiqué that Finland’s government is taking the alleged territorial violation seriously and an investigation is underway.
This marks the second such violation by Russian military aircraft in recent months.
The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday that Russian Ambassador Pavel Kuznetsov had been summoned to explain these occurrences.
Finland, which ended decades of neutrality by joining NATO in 2023, shares a 1,340-kilometre border with Russia.
Recent satellite images have shown that Russia is significantly strengthening its military infrastructure along the border between the two countries.
