Cheese production in Belgium continued to rise last year, driven largely by an increase in the production of mozzarella-style and fresh cheese.

On Tuesday, Belgian statistics agency Statbel released new figures on the production of the popular dairy product.

In 2022, over 137,400 tonnes of cheese were produced in Belgium, a rise of 11.8% from 2021. Dairy companies produced 51.7% more fresh cheese, amounting to 22,074 tonnes.

Mozzarella-style cheese remained the frontrunner, with production increasing by 7.9% to reach 87,234 tonnes. The Italian soft cheese has two types, cow's milk or buffalo's milk, is a key ingredient for pizza makers.

In the West Flemish town of Langemark, dairy cooperative Milcobel operates a large mozzarella-style plant using cow’s milk.

Meanwhile, the group Laiterie des Ardennes opened a mozzarella factory in Baudour, Wallonia, in 2021, and recently announced plans to expand this facility.
