The smoking cessation drug Champix will be available again in Belgium from Sunday, as announced by the Federal Health Minister, Frank Vandenbroucke, on Saturday.
The medication’s sale was halted in Belgium in 2021 due to the presence of an impurity. The company has now made necessary adjustments to the production process, allowing its return to the market.
Champix will be reimbursed as before, but only for patients aged 18 and over who are undergoing treatment with an accredited smoking cessation specialist. Reimbursements will cover up to three quit attempts, each consisting of a 12-week treatment, over a five-year period.
The total cost of the treatment to the patient will be €31, while €154 will be covered by health insurance.
“Smoking is harmful to health, and we must help smokers quit. The reimbursement of Champix can make a difference for thousands who can finally give up cigarettes or vaping,” commented Minister Vandenbroucke in a statement.
