An 88-year-old woman was mistakenly declared dead before waking up in her coffin, the Czech newspaper Pravo reported on Monday, prompting a police investigation.
On Friday morning, a resident of Pilsen, a city 90 km west of Prague, called emergency services believing his wife had passed away because he could not wake her. A forensic doctor arrived, declared the woman dead, and issued a death certificate.
It was only when funeral home staff attempted to place the woman’s body into a coffin that she opened her eyes.
The funeral directors immediately called emergency services, and the woman was taken to hospital for observation. Remarkably, she is in good health considering her age and previous illnesses.
The police have launched an investigation into the doctor, who is suspected of failing to provide assistance to a person in danger.
The company that dispatched the forensic doctor expressed regret and announced there would be repercussions.
