An estimated 10% of young people aged 18 to 35 in Belgium suffer from a chronic illness, with 82% experiencing daily constraints as a result, according to a study released on Tuesday by the federal public service of Social Security.

The research, which began in May 2024, surveyed 881 young individuals via a questionnaire and included interviews with 54 participants, as well as discussions with eleven patient representatives.

Findings reveal that young people with chronic illnesses often navigate a maze of procedures, fragmented information, and inadequate support, although they share the same ambitions as their peers: to study, work, and fully participate in social life.

The survey highlighted that 82% of participants reported daily constraints due to their condition.

"Chronic illness affects not just physical health, but also the mental well-being, social life, and future prospects of young people," emphasised Dr Jolien Robijns, one of the researchers involved in the project.

Many of these young people are in a "grey area," experiencing significant limitations without any official recognition.

The study also highlighted that the procedures for applying for benefits are complex and not well-suited to young people, with 63% facing challenges due to a lack of understanding of their rights, administrative difficulties, or the challenge of proving their medical situation or level of autonomy.

Regarding students in particular, many are unaware of the available accommodations or statuses, with 41% feeling their illness negatively impacts their chances of success, and 39% choosing not to disclose their condition due to fear of stigmatisation.
