A young child who became ill after eating Haribo sweets that turned out to contain cannabis, was in a coma in the hospital, confirmed Ziekenhuisgroep Twente (ZGT) on Tuesday evening.

Two children were brought to the hospital in Almelo, in the east of the Netherlands. The child who was in serious condition was transferred to another, more specialised hospital.

"Both children are now doing well again," said a spokesperson, confirming reports from local Dutch media Tubantia and RTV Oost.

The children are of toddler and preschool age, according to the spokesperson. The hospital does not want to give any further details to protect the privacy of the family. "The news was laughed at a bit, but it was more dangerous than people initially thought," she added.

The big question remains how the soft drugs ended up in the sweets. The police are investigating this.

Haribo also recalled sweets in Belgium. It concerns 1 kg bags of the product Happy Cola F!ZZ, with a best-before date until January 2026 and production code L341-4002307906. It is not clear in which Belgian stores the large packages in question were sold. Consumers are asked to send the product to the Belgian head office.
