One person was killed in a shooting at around 09:00 on Thursday morning, in the Brussels municipality of Anderlecht. The police have launched an appeal for witnesses.

The incident occurred near the Westland Shopping centre in Anderlecht. A 49-year-old man was initially reported as being seriously injured due to a gunshot wound to the chest.

"This morning, shortly after 09:00, a shooting took place on the Boulevard Sylvain Dupuis in Anderlecht. One person was killed. The victim was a man born in 1976," the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed in a statement later on Thursday.

Public prosecutors were notified and dispatched to the scene, accompanied by the Federal Police forensic analysts and a ballistics expert. A judicial investigation for murder has since been opened by the Brussels Prosecutor's Office.

Six bullet casing were found at the scene, which were not fired from an automatic weapon, according to Le Soir, who had the details confirmed by the mayor of the municipality, Fabrice Cumps (PS).

According to a police appeal, the incident took place in the car park of the "Plum'Art", where a man was fatally shot by an individual on foot. "After the incident, the suspect jumped onto a scooter driven by an accomplice who was waiting for him. They fled towards the centre of Anderlecht."

Police are seeking witnesses or anyone with information about the suspects to come forward. Individuals can contact the authorities via email at opsporingen@police.belgium.eu or through the toll-free number 0800/30300, with confidentiality assured.

"In the interests of the investigation and out of respect for the victim's family, the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office will not be making any further comments," the prosecutor's office added.
