Saint-Josse municipality announced on Thursday the granting of a permit for the significant redevelopment of the “Cudell Island,” named after a former mayor of this central Brussels area.
The project includes constructing a school for 250 pupils, a French-speaking nursery for 28 children, a multi-sports hall, and renovating outdoor spaces and the Rue des Deux Eglises.
Located between Place Saint-Josse, Rue de la Pacification, Rue des Deux Eglises, and Rue de l’Artichaut, the inside of Cudell Island is currently mainly occupied by the dilapidated prefabs of La Nouvelle Ecole.
According to the local council, obtaining the permit is a major step forward in this ambitious project, with construction set to begin in 2026 and completion expected by spring 2028.
Mayor Emir Kir stated on Thursday that this flagship project of the municipal legislature fulfils a commitment to prioritising youth facilities, as highlighted in the legislative declaration.
He noted that the project would involve an investment of approximately 15 million euros. The municipality hopes to secure about 60% of the funding from the Brussels Region and the Federation Wallonia-Brussels.
Mayor Kir also mentioned that the renovation of around 100 social and municipal housing units within the island has already begun.
