The Brussels' metro line 5 will face disruptions between Merode and Herrmann-Debroux from 10 June until the end of August. A new security signalling system will be installed during the summer period.

Services will be suspended after 21:00 between these two stations but will operate normally on Friday, Saturday, Sunday evenings, and public holidays to accommodate weekend outings, according to transport operator STIB/MIVB.

The work schedule includes closures from Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 June, Monday 16 to Thursday 19 June, and Monday 23 to Thursday 26 June.

In July, closures will occur from Wednesday 2 to Thursday 3 July, and Monday 7 to Thursday 10 July.

In August, the line will close from Monday 18 August to Wednesday 20 August.

Shuttle buses will be available to support passenger journeys on the affected part of the route.

STIB noted that the service interruption will provide more time for crews to install Communication-Based Train Control equipment, ultimately allowing increased service frequency.

The current signalling system, installed in 1976, requires modernisation to match the growth in metro traffic, including new vehicles and higher frequency, the agency explains.

Metro lines 1 and 5, which are "particularly crowded," are the first to be equipped with the new system.
