The Brussels Court of Appeal has requested that Justice Minister Annelies Verlinden hire 75 more people, according to a report by L’Echo on Wednesday.
The court’s request includes 26 magistrates, 23 clerks, 12 administrative assistants, and 14 contractual workers. It asked for mostly French speakers.
These recruitments aim to address a "structural lack of resources" and tackle the significant backlog in cases, which the court refers to as an "endemic judicial backlog" persisting for many years. The backlog has partly resulted from the increasing influx of new cases over the past five years.
Verlinden(CD&V) has established working groups to improve the situation. Her office stated that she is confident that the additional resources secured for Justice this year at her request will need to be increased in the future.
