The Leuven police are now the first police force in the district to have their own drone team.

The team currently consists of four trained officers and has three drones at its disposal. The aim is to respond more swiftly and efficiently to changing situations and safety issues.

Mayor Mohamed Ridouani stated, “With the drone team, we are taking another step forward in safety for our city.” Ridouani emphasised that drones will help assess situations such as large events, major traffic accidents, or fires more quickly and effectively, thereby supporting the police in keeping Leuven safe and liveable.

Before deciding to establish their own drone team, the Leuven police carefully considered the move. Previously, they had relied on drone teams from the federal police, fire brigade, or other police zones for large events. “This experience showed us that drones offer significant value in managing mass events such as the World Cycling Championships or the European Running Championships,” noted the Leuven police. There is also regular assistance requested from the federal police helicopter, though it is not always available and is quite costly.

Over the past few months, four police officers have been trained as State Operators, a qualification exclusive to police, fire services, and civil protection. This summer, two additional team members will undergo training, bringing the team to a total of six people.
