In 2024, Tec recorded a total of 155.4 million journeys, including 146.4 million on regular services, marking an increase of 4 million compared to 2023 and the highest ridership rate since 2017, announced the Walloon public transport company at its general assembly on Wednesday.
The Tec network, comprising 831 routes and 32,107 stops, underwent several changes last year, such as the redevelopment of the Gaume-South-Ardenne area, the adaptation of the Gembloux-Basse-Sambre network, and the expansion of the on-demand Tec service. New routes, including those to the Grand Hospital of Charleroi, were also introduced.
The public transport company is advancing the decarbonisation of its fleet, which in 2024 included 825 hybrid buses out of a total of 2,721 vehicles (comprising 1,945 in operation and 776 from private transport companies).
Financially, Tec, which employs 5,817 staff, reported an 8% increase in its turnover compared to 2023, reaching €131.8 million. The annual result, impacted by indexation and inflation, resulted in a deficit of €2.5 million.
Following the recent commencement of the Liège tram line, Tec is continuing various projects deemed “structural,” such as the expansion works of Charleroi’s light metro (new M5 line) and the upcoming BUSWAY routes in Liège. Additionally, Tec has begun preparations for implementing a new, more intuitive ticketing system in its vehicles, aiming to improve passenger experience.
Finally, preparations are underway to introduce the first 100% electric buses in 2025, with construction work beginning on Mobi’Park (Tilleur) and Mécalys (Andenne), the expansion of the Baulers depot (Nivelles), and the ongoing electrification project at Robermont (Liège).
