In the investigation into the violent death of a 47-year-old woman in Zottegem, East Flanders, her ex-partner has been detained by the magistrate in Oudenaarde, according to the East Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The woman’s body was discovered on Tuesday morning at her home on Ter Heiden Street, in the Erwetegem district of Zottegem. An inquiry was initiated, revealing that she died violently. On Tuesday, the prosecutor’s office indicated a suspect had been identified, confirming on Wednesday that it is her ex-partner.

The man is suspected of killing the woman with a knife, though this has not been confirmed. The couple was undergoing divorce proceedings but continued living together after separating last year. The suspect is believed to have been arrested for murder following a confession, but the prosecutor’s office has not disclosed details about the motive or circumstances.

The man is scheduled to appear before the Oudenaarde council chamber on Friday, which will decide on his continued detention.
