Poland threatens to introduce checks at border with Germany
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk

Poland is considering implementing checks at its border with Germany this summer if the number of migrants coming into the country increases, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Wednesday.

In recent weeks, the new German government has tightened migration rules. In response, Karol Nawrocki, narrowly elected as Poland’s president, called for stricter controls at the Polish border, anticipating potential returns of migrants from Germany.

Tusk indicated that it was very likely that there would be partial border controls this summer along the German border.

The Polish Prime Minister also mentioned that Poland is seeking a majority within the European Union to limit or abolish visa-free travel, specifically citing Georgia. There have been previous incidents involving Georgians in Poland.

Warsaw has already tightened asylum regulations.

Poland accuses Russia and Belarus of organising the movement of migrants to the border in an attempt to create instability within the European Union.
