The Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) will undertake concrete repairs on the Antwerp ring road (R1) and the R2 through the port area from Friday 13 June to Monday 16 June.

AWV warns that these works will cause disruption, but insists they are essential to improve the road surface condition.

On the R1, repairs will occur in the direction of the Netherlands near the Stenenbrug in Borgerhout, just before the Antwerp-East junction. The most significant impact will be from Friday night to Saturday when three lanes will be closed. For the remainder of the weekend, only one lane will be shut.

On the R2, work will mainly focus on the section between the Tijsmanstunnel and the Liefkenshoektunnel heading towards Ghent. Throughout the weekend, the Tijsmanstunnel in the direction of Ghent will be closed. Traffic will be rerouted via the A12 to Zandvliet, then along the Scheldelaan (N101) to Lillo (12), where drivers can rejoin the R2 towards Ghent.

On Sunday night, the Tijsmanstunnel will also be closed in the direction of the Netherlands. A similar detour via the A12 and the Scheldelaan will be in place.
