Amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran, Cypriot authorities have activated an app designed to guide citizens to the nearest bunkers in emergencies.

Named SafeCY, the app also provides practical advice and information on what behaviour to adopt during an attack. Cyprus, which lists around 2,200 safe locations and bunkers, is the European Union member closest to the conflict. The country also hosts two British military bases that could be targeted by Iran. The main base, located in Akrotiri near the port city of Limassol, is approximately 275 kilometres northwest of Haifa, Israel, and has been used repeatedly for military deployments in recent decades.

In parallel, Israeli airlines have moved some of their aircraft to Cyprus for security reasons amidst recent attacks.

Cypriot public radio RIK reports that increased security measures have been implemented around Larnaca and Paphos airports. Given its proximity to Israel, residents of Cyprus’s southern coast can sometimes witness distant attacks.
