A vehicle carrying five people—two parents, two children, and a grandmother—crashed into a bridge pillar near the Quatre Bras junction in Wezembeek-Oppem on the outer ring of Brussels on Sunday morning.
The grandmother succumbed to the injuries, while the father and a child were rushed to the hospital and are reported to be in critical condition.
Initial information from the prosecutor’s office, based on surveillance footage, suggests the car veered from the middle lane to the hard shoulder, then onto the verge, and finally ended up on its right side.
All occupants were trapped and required extrication by firefighters. A traffic expert from the prosecutor’s office attended the scene.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident. Following the accident, a section of the outer ring was closed for about two hours.
