The Antwerp’s Public Prosecutor’s Office, OPP,  is conducting an investigation into culpable negligence following an incident last week in which a nine-year-old boy was critically injured in De Nekker recreation area in Mechelen.

The boy, initially reported missing and later found unconscious in a swimming pond during a search, remains in critical condition.

He was on a school trip to De Nekker at the time of the incident.

The investigation is against unknown parties, meaning it is not necessarily targeting the accompanying teachers, the OPP said.
