In the Kardinaal Mercierlaan in Leuven, an electric car was completely destroyed by fire last night, leading to the temporary closure of the street, the local police reported on Tuesday.
The vehicle, which had a German number plate, was parked near the Arenberg Castle when it caught fire shortly after 3 a.m.
“The street was closed to all traffic because the flames were very high,” explained a police spokesperson. The fire brigade managed to control the blaze but had to call in colleagues from Zaventem to provide a container to cool the vehicle completely. The car in the container was then transported to the Zaventem fire station.
The driver of the car was found in a nearby hotel in the morning. Only the vehicle itself was severely damaged, but the cleaning service was called to clear the street where the fire occurred.
