In the presence of Sven Gatz (Open VLD) and Ans Persoons (Vooruit.brussels), the foundation stone for the future multifunctional school campus at Pleinlaan in the Brussels municipality of Ixelles was laid on Tuesday.
This project, worth an investment of €60 million, aims to accommodate two secondary schools and provide space for community activities. Located close to the Etterbeek campus of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), the new campus will host over 1,150 students.
The campus will include the GO! Atheneum Etterbeek, catering to 700 students, and the Imelda Institute of vzw KATOBA, which will welcome 450 students. The complex is scheduled to open its doors in September 2026.
The educational infrastructure spans 13,400 square metres and includes over 2,000 square metres dedicated to sport and movement, with these facilities available outside school hours as well. Furthermore, GC De Maalbeek will move into the new building at Pleinlaan and will have access to a theatre hall.
The renovation of the former Beobank headquarters is being managed by Befimmo, with a focus on circularity and the reuse of building materials.
“This significant investment aligns with our broader ambition to sustainably strengthen Dutch-language education in Brussels. The infrastructure of a school is closely linked to the quality of education and serves as a crucial lever to enhance the well-being of students and teachers,” said Sven Gatz, VGC member responsible for Education and School Construction.
