French President Emmanuel Macron has cautioned that attempting to topple the Iranian government by military means would be a grave mistake leading to chaos.

Speaking at the G7 summit in Alberta, western Canada, President Macron urged instead for a diplomatic resolution.

US President Donald Trump left the summit earlier than planned to discuss with White House officials the role the United States should play amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, expressing an inclination to offer increased military support to Israel in its actions against Iran.

France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the French government, in collaboration with Germany and the United Kingdom, was committed to seeking a resolution to the conflict through negotiations.

He highlighted the prior success of these three countries in achieving an international agreement in 2015 to limit Iran’s nuclear programme.
