A suspect was charged for leaking information from a police report on the death of Fabian, the 11-year-old who died in a police chase in Brussels, the Brussels Public Prosecutor's Office announced in a statement on Wednesday.
The criminal investigation into the leak was launched last week, following the publication of an article on French-speaking public media RTBF, which included details from a confidential report into Fabian's case.
The 11-year-old died on 2 June after being hit by a police car. The schoolboy was reportedly stopped by the police while riding an electric scooter through Parc Elisabeth in Ganshoren. He fled, triggering a police chase. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him but he died later in hospital.
According to the preliminary findings into the fatal chase, the police vehicle was travelling at over 40 km/h in the park without its blue lights or siren on. The officer who was driving was arrested.
On 16 June, a suspect in the case of the information leak was questioned. The suspect was charged by the investigation judge with unauthorised consultation of databases and breach of professional confidentiality.
The suspect was released on bail but is not allowed to enter police stations and is prohibited from contacting police officers and members of the press.
The investigation is ongoing. "The investigation must clarify whether the suspect in question is behind the leak of the official report. The suspect is alleged to have passed on information to third parties who are not bound by professional secrecy," the Prosecutor's Office added.
