More than two centuries after Napoleon’s final defeat, the Battle of Waterloo will be brought back to life on 28-29 June in Wallonia, where one of Europe’s largest historical re-enactments is once again expected to draw thousands of spectators.

Some 2,000 uniformed re-enactors, 100 horses and 25 cannons will take to the fields near the Waterloo battlefield site to reenact key moments from the 1815 clash that marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Saturday’s main battle will begin at 19:30, followed by a second event on Sunday morning at 10:30. Both performances feature live historical commentary, pyrotechnics and dramatic, choreographed cavalry charges.

The re-enactment takes place just 20km south of Brussels. Visitors to the event can also enjoy access to bivouac camps, historical displays, and a new beer village set up behind the Lion’s Mound. Visitors can also explore locations from the real battle, including Hougoumont Farm and Napoleon’s final headquarters.

The weather is expected to be sunny and mild during the event, with temperatures forecasted to reach highs of around 26 degrees Celsius.

The site can be accessed by train to Waterloo or Braine-l’Alleud stations, followed by a short bus or taxi ride. On-site parking costs €9 and must be booked in advance.

Tickets range from €22.50 for standing access to €55 for seated grandstand spots, with discounted rates for children. More information can be found on the event’s official website.
