The popularity of bicycle leasing is rising in Belgium, according to market research conducted by the mobility federation, Traxio.

Currently, there are 166,796 bicycles under leasing agreements in Belgium, with approximately one-third of these (52,278) added in 2024 alone.

This growing trend is partly attributed to the rise of electric bikes, with nearly two out of every three leased bicycles being electric. Of these, urban and trekking electric bikes dominate the market, accounting for 54.21% of leased bicycles in 2024.

It should be noted that 15% of leased bicycles are either racing or gravel bikes, while speed pedelecs remain stable at around 13% (12.68%). Longtail and cargo bikes make up 5.32% of the leasing market, and electric mountain bikes account for 3.41%.

Despite its increasing popularity, bicycle leasing remains a niche phenomenon. Only 1.91% of the active population uses this option, in contrast to 14.7% of workers who have company cars.

Traxio sees a "potential for growth" in this area. "We are only at the beginning of what bicycle leasing could mean for Belgian mobility," stated Filip Rylant, Traxio’s spokesperson, in a press release.

"A study shows that Belgians frequently use their bikes, especially in Flanders. This trend opens up numerous opportunities for bicycle leasing, as this arrangement is appealing to both self-employed individuals and employees, including public servants who opt for cafeteria plans or other leasing options through their employers.”
