Brussels’ outgoing Mobility Minister, Elke Van den Brandt (Groen), has expressed dissatisfaction over the decision by the Ixelles municipality to reopen the road section between the two Ixelles ponds to two-way traffic from 7 July.

This decision reverses the one-way traffic system that was established in 2023 under the Good Move circulation plan by the previous coalition led by the French-speaking greens (Ecolo) and former mayor Christos Doulkeridis.

"The current leadership (MR; PS; Engagés) is backtracking due to the pressure from a few car drivers' lobbying and they are proud of it," Van den Brandt criticised.

She further remarked: "At the Flagey ponds, children play and residents peacefully enjoy the greenery. Reopening it and driving transit traffic into neighbourhoods is simply nonsensical."

Van den Brandt vowed to "oppose this kind of lack of political courage and continue efforts to make our city more liveable."
