A new paddle route on the Grote Nete river has been launched in Herenthout, Antwerp Kempen, providing 35 kilometres of waterway with ten entry and exit points from Westerlo to Lier, ideal for the activity known as "packrafting."

Packrafting, which combines boating, hiking, and nature enjoyment, is a trend arriving from Canada. Participants need a waterproof backpack containing an inflatable boat, paddle, and life jacket. You can either use your own packraft or reserve equipment through packraften.be, picking it up at Domein Den Asberg in Westerlo.

Antwerp’s Deputy for Tourism, Mireille Colson, stated, “With the packraft route, we’ve created an authentic Kempen experience. It’s perfect for a ‘tough’ day out with the kids or a multi-day hiking adventure with friends. Local, sustainable, and surprising.”

The route follows the Grote Nete from the Marly Bridge, on the Westerlo and Herselt border, passing through Heist-op-den-Berg, Herenthout, Berlaar, and Nijlen to the Netekanaal in Lier. It includes new steps for easy boat access, and information boards display an overview map, navigation instructions, codes of conduct (such as dealing with litter or noise), and interesting facts about the Grote Nete.

More details about packrafting on the Grote Nete can be found at Kempen.be.
