A 49-year-old man was found seriously injured near the CPAS parking area in Zottegem, East Flanders, during the night of Monday 20 May 2024, and police are now seeking witnesses to this attempted murder.

The victim, who had been stabbed, was discovered around 3:45 by a woman collecting her car from the parking lot after a night at the Sinksenkermis in Zottegem. She contacted emergency services immediately.

The man, identified as Jurgen Van De Walle, had been out for the evening and left the Maboel café alone at 3:19, as confirmed by surveillance cameras, but his movements afterwards remain unclear. Despite a year-long investigation, authorities do not know the motive, and there is no indication from his personal life that anyone wished him harm.

Just before finding Van De Walle, the woman saw a man walking in the parking area. He is described as having very short, light-coloured hair, being of medium build, approximately 1.75 metres tall, wearing jeans, a brown hooded sweatshirt, and trainers.

Investigators are calling for anyone who was present in the parking area between 3:00 and 4:00 on Monday 20 May 2024, to come forward.

The police are also searching for two young women who stopped to help the victim while in a small grey car, as they might hold vital information.
