The price of potatoes on the open market has fallen to €50 per tonne, the lowest level in several years, according to figures from the industry organisation Belgapom.
This pricing does not apply to potatoes sold by producers through contracts, which account for 70 to 80% of sales. The open market primarily involves frozen potato product processors.
Belgapom reports that the market is “quiet,” with supply exceeding demand. “Unlike previous years, processing units have enough contracted potatoes,” said Christophe Vermeulen, CEO of the organisation.
The abundant supply is due to a successful 2024 harvest and the early arrival of new potatoes on the market. Additionally, Belgian exports of potato products have stagnated for the first time in years.
Despite these market conditions, the potato sector in Belgium is thriving. Processors have invested in new production facilities. “We’re in a period of transition, but it’s not dire,” explained Vermeulen. Potatoes remain one of the most profitable crops for farmers.
Low open market potato prices are unlikely to affect supermarket shelves.
