A court in Liège has awarded compensation to 47 local residents disturbed by noise from Bierset Airport, the court announced in a press release on Tuesday.

They are to receive compensation ranging from €104.16 to €625 per month, depending on their proximity to the airport and the extent of noise disturbance: the higher the noise levels, the greater the compensation granted.

The 47 residents were among 251 plaintiffs represented in a civil action suit launched in 2001, which had also sought a complete ban on night flights. However, the court ruled that banning night flights was beyond its jurisdiction.

The plaintiffs had been waiting since 2001 for a final budget for their compensations. After years of legal proceedings, a final ruling on this issue was made in 2020. The Liège court has now determined the compensation amounts on the basis of that ruling.

In the meantime, 192 residents had already reached settlements with the airport and left the case, while 12 either withdrew or passed away.
