Starting 1 July, military personnel will be tasked with ensuring the security of the Doel and Tihange nuclear power plants. This follows a cooperation agreement signed on 10 June between the Ministers of the Interior and Defence, Bernard Quintin and Theo Francken.

Currently, these sites are monitored by the Federal Police’s Directorate of Security (DAB), which also handles other duties such as transporting detainees to court. However, there is a shortage of staff, and inspectors are being used for tasks that should be handled by other personnel.

The agreement will free up approximately 200 police officers, allowing a shift in resources to bolster security in Brussels and other areas throughout the country, according to the relevant ministries.

From 1 December, military personnel will also secure the nuclear facilities in Mol, Geel, and Dessel, with security at the Fleurus site set to be transferred on 1 April 2026.
