A Syrian national, aged 28, was sentenced by the Liège Criminal Court on Friday to 40 months in prison and an €8,000 fine for participating in the activities of a terrorist group.
The man’s activities, committed between September 2023 and July 2024, were reported after he claimed to be a supporter of the so-called Islamic State and referenced the provision of weapons.
A mobile phone found in his possession in his cell contained images of executions and weapons. He was also conducting research on jihad and was in contact with individuals known to be radicalised.
While incarcerated, he assaulted guards and made specific death threats. Investigations revealed that nearing his release date, he had attempted to saw through the bars of his cell, preparing for an escape.
The man, known under 25 different identities, had offered to supply weapons for a terrorist plot. The court sentenced him to 40 months in prison and imposed an €8,000 fine.
