Throughout the summer, children can ride on a tram along the coast using a paper flower as their ticket, announced the Flemish transport operator De Lijn on Friday.

The tram line which operates between Knokke and De Panne, takes passengers along the 67-kilometre Belgian coastline. While it is operational all year long it is a particularly popular mode of transport in the summer months.

"On the Coastal Tram, you will find tourists visiting their favourite spots, little ones heading to the beach shops and grandparents enjoying the beach without the stress of parking," reads a De Lijn press release.

To promote the transport route, De Lijn is facilitating access to the coastal tram. In July and August, children under the age of 12 can use a paper flower, dubbed a "beach flower", as their ticket to ride on the coastal tram.

From 1 July, the summer initiative will be promoted through colourful De Lijn vehicles decorated with the so-called beach flowers.

"We and our colleagues are really looking forward to showing that the Coastal Tram is the best way to get around the seaside," said a De Lijn driver, Olivier, in a press statement.

In addition, the initiative aims to encourage the use of more sustainable modes of transport. "The fact that we can get the youngest children excited about public transport in this way is the icing on the cake," Olivier added.
