Just after 10 p.m. on Friday night, the Grand-Place in Brussels becomes a scene of intrigue under a clear sky as two powerful spotlights light up City Hall.
“What is happening right now over there?” a curious tourist asks. The answer? The inaugural event promoting 'The Smurfs Movie' is about to begin.
Suddenly, a tall blond figure in a white dress appears. It's none other than Smurfette herself!
Behind her stands Véronique Culliford, daughter of Peyo, the creator and artist of the little blue characters, proudly observing the scene as more people gather at the foot of City Hall.
At exactly 10:30 pm, the Grand-Place is transformed as historic facades are bathed in blue light, creating a magical atmosphere in the heart of the Belgian capital.
Two giant Smurfs, one of them Papa Smurf, descend to greet the crowd, sparking a wave of excitement. Mobile phones are raised. Children fidget with anticipation. Adults beam with delight.
There are selfies, videos, and cheers, and a cheerful, lively commotion all around.
Minutes earlier, no one knew precisely what was about to happen. Just a few moments later, it’s all over. The Smurfs depart. The crowd disperses into the city centre’s alleys, as if nothing happened, but the enchantment lingers.
This magical moment marked the beginning of celebrations for the world premiere of 'The Smurfs Movie,' set for Saturday at the Square, and featuring notable guests including Rihanna, the voice of Smurfette, ahead of the official cinema release on 16 July.
