Meet the Belgian tennis players competing at this year’s Wimbledon

The Wimbledon Championships started in London yesterday, drawing fans from all over the world. It is the third Grand Slam of the tennis season and the only one played on grass courts.

The tournament will feature five Belgian players across the singles categories. A sixth player, Greet Minnen, was due to play a first round match at Wimbledon yesterday, but the 27-year-old had to pull out at the last minute due to a back injury.

Women's Singles

Elise Mertens

Mertens became world No. 1 in doubles on 10 May 2021, the third Belgian to hold the top ranking in either singles or doubles after Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin. She has won 21 doubles titles and is a four-time major champion in doubles, having won the 2019 US Open, the 2021 Australian Open, the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and the 2024 Australian Open.

Yanina Wickmayer

Wickmayer has long been a fixture on the world tennis circuit. She was tipped for great things by Time magazine in 2011 when the publication named her one of the 30 Legends of Women's Tennis: Past, Present and Future. In 2009, she reached the semi-final stage at the US Open.

Zizou Bergs

Bergs is the current Belgian number one ranked male tennis player. In May this year, he reached number 49 in the global ATP rankings. He made his Grand Slam debut in 2022, after receiving a wildcard into Wimbledon.

David Goffin

Goffin made his breakthrough at the 2012 French Open, reaching the fourth round before losing to Roger Federer. He subsequently reached four major quarterfinals, at the 2016 French Open, and the 2017 Australian Open, and the 2019 and 2022 Wimbledon Championships. Goffin reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 7, which made him the highest ranked male player from Belgium in tennis history.
