The southern Italian city of Naples was shaken by a powerful earthquake on Monday, but no there were no immediate reports of casualties.

According to the Italian Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology, INGV, the earthquake, which struck the western part of Naples and several neighbouring municipalities around 12:45 p.m., had a magnitude of 4.6 and was among the strongest in years for the region.

A lighter tremor with a magnitude of 2.2 followed just minutes later.

The fire brigade reported no deaths or injuries and minimal damage. However, the Italian news agency noted that many people fled into the streets in fear, and train services were temporarily halted.

Southern Italy experiences frequent earthquakes. On 15 March, the Apulia region, located in the heel of Italy’s boot, was hit by a 4.7 magnitude quake, followed by another measuring 3.8.

Just days earlier, on 13 March, an earthquake had also struck Naples.
