Ground staff at Dutch airline KLM will go on strike on 9 July to demand a pay rise, the CNV union reported on Wednesday.

The strike will last eight hours, from 14:00 to 22:00. "We want KLM to offer something concrete for ground staff. Vague promises are of no use to us," the union said.

Ground staff refers to workers who carry out non-flight related tasks such as handling luggage.

Last week, a Dutch judge banned a planned 24-hour strike by ground staff for Saturday. However, the union is confident next week's strike will go ahead.

"The judge made it very clear last week that the ban only applied to that particular Saturday, because a peak in passengers was expected then, in combination with the busy military police and the dismantling of the NATO summit," stated the CNV negotiator, Souleiman Amallah, in a press release

This week marks the official start of the summer holidays in part of the Netherlands. This is usually a particularly busy time for airports, with many passengers departing or arriving on holidays.
