History
Originally built in 1665, this grand building was originally an orphanage before serving as the former Palace of Justice from 1829. It was extensively expanded and renovated in 1836 by Dutch architect Jan de Greef, who incorporated design influences from his travels to Paris and Rome. The building is actually renowned as a prime example of his architectural style.
For decades, the building stood as a symbol of justice and order, its grand architecture and imposing presence commanding respect from all who passed through its doors. For 200 years, it was the site of criminal trials, including that of Cor van Hout, the mastermind of the Freddy Heineken kidnapping.
As the years passed by, the building fell into disrepair, until Rosewood stepped in, embarking on an ambitious 10-year project to restore the building to its former glory. The result is nothing short of breathtaking! Behind the redesign is Studio Piet Boon, honouring the building’s heritage with a modern take on Dutch craftsmanship, combining historic grandeur with contemporary sophistication.

Location
A major factor to any hotel’s success is its location and the Rosewood certainly has it all, located on the idyllic Prinsengracht canal. Lined with historic buildings and picturesque bridges, it is one of Amsterdam's most beautiful. Here you can watch the world go by, or take a boat ride in the hotel’s very own ‘Salon Boat’.
First impressions
From a distance the building is nothing short of striking. Stepping through the hotel's grand entrance, we were transported to a world of luxury and sophistication, and even handed a glass of champagne while checking in!
You soon discover that the Rosewood is much more than “just a hotel”, its more like an art gallery, exhibiting more than 1,000 pieces of art. We first noticed the collaboration with Nxt Museum at the end of the lobby which rotates a different image regularly. And the vending machine filled with art from artist Caspar Braat selling limited-edition sculptures, paying tribute to the city with iconic Dutch designs.
Bedrooms
The hotel includes 134 elegantly designed guest rooms, 86 suites and 5 exclusive signature houses, which offer a true residential feel. Many rooms offer views of the picturesque canals, courtyards, and classic townhouse rooftops.
Our room on the 5th floor was well appointed, spacious, and had a wonderful view of Prinsengracht.

Food and drink
There are three options: Eeuwen, the all-day dining restaurant, Advocatuur, the styish bar, and The Court, the lobby lounge.
Eeuwen features a menu that blends traditional flavours with modern twists and international influences. Here we had an exceptional dinner with the highlights being the fresh crab brioche, and the cod with clams. The dishes are were all packed with flavour but not overcomplicated, showcasing seasonal dutch ingredients. Attention to detail is evident here, from the beautifully designed interior to the impeccable service.
Advocatuur is a must-visit to experience the unique in-house cocktails creations and Dutch spirits. It even features an on-site distillery which produces its own jenever, and there are two tandoori ovens serving snacks. Highlights were the lamb kofta and the melt-in-the-mouth pork belly, which were both divine.

Wellness
Those looking for some wellness are well taken care of with the Asaya spa, a real serene sanctuary blending Ayurveda traditions with innovative therapies, all designed to soothe both body and mind. We found it to be the perfect place to relax and unwind after a day of exploring the city. Particular highlight was the indoor pool and the indulgent jacuzzi.
There is also a boutique studio where you can book a private pilates or yoga class.
