Savings accounts in Belgium topped the €290-billion mark in May, having increased by €4.4 billion in one month, according to figures released on Thursday by the national bank, BNB.
The volume of deposits went from €285.9 billion in April to €290.3 billion in May.
This is the first time since July 2023 that the €290-billion threshold has been crossed.
Back then, households had withdrawn around €22 billion from their savings accounts to invest heavily in tax-favoured government bonds.
