Another extra lane was cleared in the Kennedy Tunnel towards Ghent on Sunday at around 14:15. As a result, two lanes are now available to traffic. From Antwerp East, drivers currently still have to queue for an hour, but the traffic situation is expected to improve soon. So reports the Flemish Traffic Centre.

Due to large-scale renewal works, traffic was restricted to one lane in both directions since Saturday evening. Since Sunday morning, all lanes have reopened in the direction of the Netherlands. Towards Ghent, however, traffic was limited to one lane. Due to two rear-end collisions, the tunnel was also briefly closed completely in the morning and afternoon.

This caused walking traffic from Antwerp East. Drivers had to queue there for an hour. "The works went smoothly last night," says spokesman Peter Bruyninckx. "As a result, we can now open an extra lane in the direction of Ghent."

On a normal Sunday, a little short of 70,000 vehicles pass through the Kennedy tunnel. "The disruption is not too bad: in fine weather we would have expected worse," Bruyninckx said.
